FAQs

Q: What are the school-day hours?

  • A: Elementary Classes will run from 8:00 AM – 2:35 PM. Morning drop-off begins at 7:30 AM.

  • A: Middle School Classes will run from 7:45 AM - 2:50 PM. Morning drop-off begins at 7:15 AM.

 

Q: Is the school calendar the same as the surrounding school districts?

  • A: Most of the major holidays and breaks coincide with other local systems’ calendars. Teacher workdays and Parent-Teacher Conference days differ slightly.

 

Q: Are uniforms required?

  • A: No, uniforms are not required.

 

Q: How do you ensure appropriate academic challenge is there for those students who need it?

  • A: The curricula we have chosen, along with the instructional approaches we implement, assists us in ensuring students are engaged and working at a level that suits their academic needs. Collaborative, project-based learning opportunities allow students to have a certain level of ownership of their learning that provides a range of latitude.

 

Q: What enrichment classes are offered for Elementary Students?

  • A: Elementary students will have Art, Music, Performing Arts, and PE in addition to their core academics. Opportunities to add additional offerings will be ongoing.

 

Q: Will there be opportunities for enrichment activities such as Battle of the Books, Robotics, MakerSpace, etc.?

  • A: We are open to providing as many enrichment activities as we can based on student and staff interest. We are also open to having parent volunteers lead enrichment activities for which they have a passion.

 

Q: What about class sizes?

  • A: Our class sizes range between 20-24.

 

Q: How are students assessed at the end of the year?

  • A: As a North Carolina public school, we must comply with all required State testing. Students in Third Grade are required to take the BOG and EOG. Students in Fourth Grade and up take all State required EOG tests.

 

Q: Are teachers required to be certified?

  • A: While the State of NC only requires Charter Schools to have 50% of their teachers certified, it is our intent to have all of our core academic teachers in possession of, or eligible to obtain and hold, an NC teaching license.

 

Q: Do younger siblings have lottery preference as they reach school age?

  • A: Yes. There is a policy providing sibling preference in order to keep families together.

 

Q: How is the school funded?

  • A: As a public school, we receive the same amount of per pupil funding as surrounding public schools. However, we do not receive any funding to assist with our capital expenses such as our building. Therefore, we have a lease-to-own agreement with a developer that we pay for out of the per pupil funding we receive.  We make up the difference through fundraising and grant applications.

 

Q: Will there be potential expansion into a high school?

  • A: As we consider our growth over the next few years, depending on demand, there could be an option to continue expanding one grade-level per year into a 9-12 structure. Stay tuned!
